The Natural Resources Information Management Toolkit (the Toolkit) has been prepared by National Land & Water Resources Audit and ANZLIC – the Spatial Information Council to assist regional natural resources management groups discover, access, visualise and manage their data and information.

The Toolkit has three components including 10 modules of how-to guides providing information on aspects of data managament and information management Tips for project management and selecting spatial data software are included. Further information is provided at the Audit's website [1]:

  1. Executive Summary
     Information on high-level issues for managers to consider and build into business processes (available in hardcopy, CD and web versions).
  2. Concise Guide for Technical Managers
     A short version guide containing essential check lists (available in hardcopy, CD and web versions).
  3. Technical Modules
     The how-to guide, comprising ten modules, for regional groups involved within natural resources data and information management.

The ten modules of how-to guides include the following topics:

  • Module 1 Information management and the sustainable management of natural resources
  • Module 2 Data management principles
  • Module 3 Interpretation and visualisation of data – an introduction to spatial information systems
  • Module 4 Key data criteria – standards and compliance
  • Module 5 Data discovery and access
  • Module 6 Project management – lessons learnt, pitfalls and best practice procedures
  • Module 7 Selecting spatial information system software
  • Module 8 Selecting a spatial information system consulting firm
  • Module 9 Map production guidelines
  • Module 10 Introduction to global positioning systems and best practice guidelines
